Built for Clarity, Not Complexity

Oakpenny was founded with a single conviction — that financial knowledge should be accessible, practical, and grounded in the real world where participants actually live.

Our Story

How Oakpenny Came to Be

Oakpenny was established in 2012 in Singapore by a small team who observed a recurring pattern: capable, working adults with limited understanding of the financial decisions they were already making. Not through any fault of their own, but simply because no one had ever explained the terrain clearly.

The name Oakpenny carries deliberate meaning — the oak for steady, unhurried growth, and the penny for the idea that financial understanding begins with foundational, granular knowledge before it scales into something larger. From the start, the approach has been methodical rather than motivational.

What started as a single programme for mid-career professionals in the Central Business District has grown into three distinct pathways — each designed to serve participants at a different point in their financial journey. The CapitaGreen location reflects the decision to remain embedded in Singapore's financial district, where context and relevance are immediate.

Over time, the team has expanded while the group sizes have remained small. That is a deliberate choice. Smaller sessions allow for the kind of dialogue and individual attention that turns information into understanding.

Our Mission

To give Singapore residents a clear, honest understanding of their financial landscape — so they can make decisions that reflect their own circumstances, values, and goals, without relying on incomplete or commercially motivated information.

Our Values

  • Patience over speed. Financial literacy builds slowly and that is the right pace for it.
  • Context over theory. Singapore-specific detail is more useful than global abstractions.
  • Honesty over promotion. We do not tell participants what they want to hear; we tell them what is useful.
  • Depth over coverage. Understanding three things well matters more than skimming thirty.

How We Operate

Standards & Protocols

The way we design and deliver our programmes reflects a set of standards that have guided the organisation since its founding.

MAS Awareness Alignment

Programme content is kept consistent with the regulatory environment overseen by the Monetary Authority of Singapore. We do not provide licensed financial advice, and that boundary is always made clear.

PDPA Data Protection

Participant data is handled in accordance with Singapore's Personal Data Protection Act. Contact and payment information is used solely for programme administration and is never shared with third parties.

Annual Curriculum Review

Each programme undergoes a full content review at the start of every year to ensure it reflects current financial products, regulatory changes, and market conditions relevant to Singapore participants.

Participant Confidentiality

Personal financial situations shared during sessions are treated with strict confidentiality. Group discussions are conducted under a mutual respect framework made explicit at the start of each programme.

Continuing Education

All facilitators maintain active continuing education commitments. This ensures that the knowledge shared in sessions reflects current thinking rather than outdated frameworks.

Participant Feedback Integration

Structured feedback is collected at the end of each cohort. Findings directly inform programme adjustments, ensuring the learning experience improves with each iteration.

Our Perspective

What We Believe About Financial Education

Financial education in Singapore occupies an unusual position. On one hand, the country's infrastructure — CPF, HDB schemes, MAS-regulated products — provides frameworks that many residents engage with from early in their working lives. On the other hand, the depth of understanding that most people bring to those frameworks is often quite shallow. Not through negligence, but because the material has rarely been explained in a way that is thorough, accessible, and genuinely useful.

At Oakpenny, we see this gap as the central challenge. The work is not about motivation or broad financial philosophy. It is about helping people understand specific mechanisms: how CPF ordinary and special accounts accumulate and interact, how unit trusts differ from direct equity holdings, what estate planning looks like in the Singapore context, and how retirement income can be structured to last across a 25 or 30-year horizon.

The people who tend to benefit most from our programmes are those who have already begun making financial decisions — sometimes significant ones — but who sense that they are working without a complete picture. The Investment Landscape Programme, for instance, is designed specifically for people who understand that they should be investing but want to understand the terrain before committing meaningfully to any direction.

This is not a sector that benefits from haste. The decisions participants make after engaging with our programmes will shape their financial lives for years. Our role is to ensure those decisions are informed, considered, and made with an accurate understanding of what is actually at stake.
